Capacitors use metal plates and non-conducive substances (or dielectric) to divert the flow of electricity (frequencies), effectively converting low frequencies that flow into it, into higher frequencies flowing out of it. A capacitor is usually soldered in between the pickup and jack as a shortcut to the grounding wire.
